The “ExceptED” Employee Grift – Getting Paid Twice for the Same Work
If you’re “essential/excepted” you’re working without a paycheck right now. Here’s how to turn that into immediate cash.
Tactic 1: The 1099 “continuity of operations” invoice Your agency can’t pay you, but your agency’s SUPPORT CONTRACTOR still has active funding. Offer to do the exact same job you’re already doing — but now on their payroll. Average rate: $120–$180/hr. They bill the government $250+/hr and pocket the difference. Everyone wins except the taxpayer (who doesn’t exist right now anyway).
Tactic 2: Sell access to your still-active agency email and SharePoint Contractors will pay $500–$2,000 per introduction to the CO, KO, or branch chief they can no longer reach because everyone else is furloughed. You’re the last open phone line.
Tactic 3: Moonlight as the “shutdown whisperer” on GLG / AlphaSights Expert networks pay ex-regulators $500–$1,500 per call. During shutdowns they’re desperate for anyone who can still say “this is what the agency will actually accept when we come back online.”
