Cash In on Federal-Employee-Specific Perks & Emergency Resources (Many People Miss These)
The government and related organizations actually have shutdown-specific lifelines.
Furlough Loans from Credit Unions & Banks (0% or very low interest)
Navy Federal, Pentagon Federal (PenFed), Andrews FCU, Wright-Patt CU, and many others offer “furlough loans” up to $10,000 at 0–2.99% that convert to 0% if the shutdown continues. Repayment is deferred until back pay arrives.
Union Emergency Funds
AFGE, NFFE, NATCA, and other federal unions have hardship funds and no-interest loans (typically $500–$3,000) for members.
Food Banks & Utility Assistance Specifically for Feds
Capital Area Food Bank (DC), FEEA (Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund), and many military relief societies open emergency aid to civilian feds during shutdowns.
Sell Your Leave Back (if you’re excepted or get back pay later)
Some agencies let you cash out annual leave instead of restoring it.
These aren’t “making money” in the traditional sense, but they are instant cash or cash-equivalent that most laid-off feds never claim.
